Lady Dawg senior night held, McLerran posts season best, and youth football wins
LOCAL SPORTS REVIEW:
CLAY COUNTY-The Clay County High School Lady Bulldog volleyball team holding their senior night, senior Jed McLerran posting a season-best time at a recent cross country meet, and two out of three youth league football teams notching their first wins highlighted this past week in local sports.
Bulldog golfers, Jr. Lady Dawg volleyball, and Jr. Dawg football all closed out their seasons over the same span, while the Lady Dawgs were to begin postseason play this week and the CCHS cross country runners were set to continue their campaign this week.
Lady Dawgs
The Lady Bulldog volleyball team finished up their regular season with a senior night match with Trousdale County on Thursday, where seniors Briley Burchett, Isabella Hale, Abby Head, Baileigh Watson, Katie Burnette, and Kalista Meadows were all honored prior to the game.
They were set to begin postseason play in Hartsville Monday after HORIZON press time in a rematch with the Lady Yellow Jackets in the first round of the district tournament.
With a win over Trousdale County, the Lady Dawgs would advance to Tuesday’s action to be held at Red Boiling Springs.
Cross country
Senior runner Jed McLerran posted a season-best time of 20:30 while running a 3.1-mile race in a meet at Sequatchie County last week, while the rest of the team also fared well.
The Bulldogs are next scheduled to run at Macon County Thursday.
The cross country team is made up of McLerran; juniors Noah Groce, Callie Devanna, and Brayden Allred; sophomores Mia Ledbetter, Alyssa Strong, and Ethan Barnes; and freshman Brayden Smith.
Youth League
Two out of three Clay County Youth League football teams notched their first wins last weekend at Cannon County, while the third fell in a close battle.
The Flag team pitched a 20-0 shutout of the Youth Lions behind three touchdowns from Zaxton Owens and two-point conversions from both Bryce Boles and Kayden Kreig.
The Senior squad also won 13-6, as Bryce Evans found the end zone twice in the victory.
The Junior team came up just short of their first win, falling to Cannon County by a score of 13-19. Jared Copeland and Tucker Donaldson each had scores in the tough loss.
The teams will enjoy a bye this week, before traveling to Westmoreland on October 15.
Golf
The CCHS golf team finished off a successful season with a third-place finish in the Region 4-A Tournament held last week at Southern Hills in Baxter.
The match wrapped up the stellar careers of seniors Lexi Head, Aden Smith, Colton Smith, Jacob Coffelt, Caleb McLerran, and Gaven Beasley.
Jr. Lady Dawgs
The Jr. Lady Dawg volleyball team ended their season last week with back-to-back wins to finish with an impressive 9-5 record.
They beat Dodson’s Branch 2-0 Monday and Jim B. Satterfield 2-1 in Hartsville Thursday to finish with one of the best seasons ever under the tutelage of head coach James Chambers.
The win over the Jr. Lady Yellow Jackets served as the final junior high game for 8th-graders Haylen Garrison, Jenna Thompson, Emma Wix, Avrie Davis, Darci Smith, Natalie Smith, Abigail Shaull, and Lily Pigg.
Jr. Dawgs
The Celina Jr. Dawgs closed out their season with a 24-0 loss to Jackson County on 8th Grade Night Thursday.
Jake Pennington, Julian Villa, Sam Brown, Waylon Hayes, Thomas Ashley, Jimmy Villa, Thomas Myrick, Jake Copeland, Oliver Boles, Javin Crawford, Andrew Hale, Rolan Holaway, and Cage Ashley were all honored at halftime of the game.
The team finished with a 1-7 record, but made strides each week playing under new head coach Marty Maxfield.
