CCHS teams split pair during first week of conference play
CELINA-Both Clay County High School (CCHS) basketball teams headed into non-conference action with Macon County here Monday night after HORIZON press time with 1-1 District 7-A records, after splitting a pair of league contests the week prior.
Last week’s two-game stretch was a tale of two totally opposite nights.
The Clay County squads dominated both the boys and girls games at Red Boiling Springs (RBS), before they were on the receiving end of the same treatment just a day later at Pickett County.
The Dawgs beat RBS 85-30, before falling to the Bobcats 76-41, while the Lady Dawgs followed the same path.
The Clay County girls first took care of RBS 48-26, before the Lady Bobcats handily beat them 73-47.
In the “Battles of the Bulldogs,” the teams from Celina shot the ball well, but in Byrdstown they only shot around 30% from the field, while the Pickett County squads lit up the scoreboard.
The Lady Bobcats made a dozen three-pointers in the girls game, before the Bobcats buried 11 in their blowout of the Bulldogs.
Junior Ella Eads led the Lady Dawgs in both contests with 13 points at RBS and 16 in Byrdstown, while senior Laci Wix added a 13-point, 15-rebound double-double versus RBS and sophomore Haylen Garrison scored 10 against the Lady Bobcats.
Senior Nate Adams paced the Dawgs in both games by scoring 15 points at RBS and 16 versus Pickett County.
Senior Lance Burchett (12) and juniors Cole Eads (13) and Nolan Adams (11) also added double figures in the RBS win.
The Clay County girls were 5-9 on the season and the boys carried a 9-3 record into their home game with Macon County Monday night.
Both teams were also set to host district foe Clarkrange Friday, before continuing league play the following Tuesday night in Gordonsville.
Clay County’s upcoming games will be carried live by the Horizon Sports Network, with a video live-stream available on the Dale Hollow Horizon Facebook page and audio-only coverage online at www.dalehollowhorizon.com/listen.
Broadcasts begin at 5:45 p.m. with a pregame show, continue with action from both the girls and boys games, and wrap up with a postgame show.
The live-stream affiliate of the newspaper plans to carry as many regular-season games as possible, along with all of Clay County’s postseason action to come.
