CCHS teams go 2-1 last week
CELINA-Both Clay County High School basketball teams finished out a busy week with 2-1 records last Friday night.
The Lady Bulldogs beat both Jellico and Friendship Christian handily, after a loss to Macon County to start the week.
The Clay County girls improved to 4-2 on the season, while the Bulldogs evened their record at 3-3.
Wins over Macon County and Jellico, followed by a loss to Friendship Christian, moved the Clay County boys to .500 on the year.
The CCHS teams were set to kick off this week’s action here at home against Gordonsville Tuesday night after HORIZON press time, before making a long road trip to Community Friday night.
Both contests this week, along with an away game at Macon County next Tuesday night, will be carried live by the Horizon Sports Network on the Dale Hollow Horizon Facebook page and online at dalehollowhorizon.com.

After leading by as many as five in the first half, the Lady Dawgs only produced 14 second-half points and fell to Macon County by a score of 40-52 in their first game here last week.
Junior Natalie Smith paced Clay County to an early lead by scoring eight of her 10 points in the first quarter, before senior Ella Eads dropped half of her team-high 16 points in the second stanza to help the Lady Dawgs pull within 26-28 of the Tigerettes at the break.
Macon County then outscored Clay County 24-14 in the final two quarters to claim the 12-point victory.

Behind three players scoring in double figures, the Dawgs downed Macon County 54-48 to tip off their action here last week.
Senior Nolan Adams led the way with 20 points, while his classmates Warner Melton and Cole Eads added 13 and 15 respectively.
Clay County never trailed in the contest, but the Tigers did narrow the Bulldog margin to 24-23 at halftime.
The Dawgs then outscored Macon County 17-6 in the third period to gain control and held on for the six-point win down the stretch.

The Lady Dawgs completed a season sweep of Jellico with a 74-27 win over the Lady Blue Devils here last Thursday, after beating them on the road earlier this season.
Ella Eads led Clay County with 17 points, junior Haylen Garrison had 15, and sophomore Kaleah Crawford added 13.
The Lady Dawgs led 25-6 at the end of the first quarter and 53-9 at halftime, before cursing to the blowout win.

The Dawgs rallied from a 16-point deficit to avenge an early season loss at Jellico with a 73-69 victory over the Blue Devils here last Thursday night.
Nolan Adams scored 12 of his team-high 24 points in the third quarter to start the comeback, before Warner Melton dropped 15 of his 18-point total in the final frame to seal the victory.
Fellow senior Aayden Cherry also joined his classmates in double figures with 11.
Midway through the second quarter, Jellico built their largest lead at 28-12, before Clay County narrowed it to 32-23 at the break.
Adams’ third-quarter push, where he scored 10-straight points, put the Dawgs up 38-37 midway through the frame, but they again fell behind in the fourth quarter.
Down 56-51 with 4:48 to play, Melton knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to give Clay County a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
Cherry, Adams, and Melton combined to make a perfect 10 of 10 from the free throw line in the final minutes, which sealed the four-point victory.

Haylen Garrison buried seven threes to lead the Lady Dawgs to a 46-29 victory over Friendship Christian with a team-high 21 points here last Friday night, while Ella Eads also broke into double figures with 12 points.
Clay County led 24-13 at halftime and 34-25 heading into the final frame, before Garrison blew the game open with her hot shooting in the fourth quarter and the Lady Dawg reserves finished off the 17-point win.

The Dawgs fell to an impressive Friendship Christian team 87-48 here last Friday night, and if wasn’t for the hot hand of senior Cole Eads, the Commander margin of victory would have been even greater.
Eads made seven threes in the contest and scored 23 points, but it wasn’t enough to counter the defensive pressure and high-percentage shooting of Friendship Christian.
Clay County kept it close early, including only trailing 15-17 at the end of the first quarter, but the Commanders upped their advantage to 43-27 at the break and poured it on in the second half for the dominating win.
