Lady Dawg volleyball team racks up 23rd win of season
CELINA-The Clay County High volleyball team took a 23-9 record into the last week of the season, and hosted the District 7-A championship here last night as the number two seed.
The Lady Bulldogs lost a close battle for the top seed at Jackson County last week, beat district rival Monterey and then lost to non-district foe Upperman.
Jackson County beat CCHS 25-21 and 25-20 in “two well-played games by both teams,” said Clay coach Gary Strong.
The Lady Bulldogs took the early lead in the first game, but fell victim to a Jackson County comeback. The Lady Blue Devils led throughout the second game, but saw CCHS stage a comeback of their own that fell just short.
On Thursday night, the Lady Bulldogs easily topped Monterey 25-11 and 25-17 and then lost to Upperman in two straight games. “We hit the ball well in both those matches, but service errors at critical times against Upperman let us down,” Strong said.
Clay County hosted the District 7-A tournament earlier this week.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: Randi Strong and Sarah Ogletree were the CCHS Lady Bulldog volleyball players of the week.
