Optimism and enthusiasm abound about fair

Plans are rapidly taking shape for the exhibits and programs for the Agricultural Free Fair which will be held next week, beginning on August 31 and to continue through September 2. 

WIth bountiful crops in every section, the fair is expected to open with the largest agricultural displays in the county’s history and optimism and enthusiasm is unbounded as the fair grows near that it will be successful from every standpoint.

Six Clay County officers were rewarded after an all night wait last Saturday night with a 65 gallon capacity still, which for some time had been known as “Roebuck,” along with 1,700 gallons of beer, in a raid near Butler’s Landing.

“Roebuck” was one of the largest stills and with the most complete outfits ever captured in Clay County. The officers participating in the raid were deputies Cage and Leverman Rich, W.F. Huffines, Judas Cherry, Steve Hestand, Raymond Barlow and two federal agents.

Elder Willie Hunter is conducting a gospel meeting at Cave Springs this week. There have been six additions to the Church.

W.A. Cook and relatives held a picnic at Standing Stone State Park last Wednesday.

Miss Betty Rose Thompson of Cookeville was in Celina Tuesday afternoon.

Mrs. Madge Draper of Whitleyville is visiting her cousin, Mrs. Thomas Waddell, this week.

Mesdames Ranford Kitchens and T.H. Mummerlyn of Waco, Texas have returned to their home after a two week’s visit with relatives here.

John H. Patterson, 85, of Willow Grove died on Saturday, August 5 after a long and lingering illness. He was born March 25, 1854 in Clay County, Tennessee and married Alice Carlock of Overton County in 1874.

At the time of his death, Mr. and Mrs. Patterson had been married for 65 years. They had lived all their lives on a farm near Willow Grove.

Funeral services were conducted at the Fellowship Cemetery at Oakley by Rev. Biars of the Methodist Church.
