Goodpasture surprised with 71st birthday party

At the age of 71, neighbors, friends and relatives of T.F. Goodpasture surprised him with a birthday dinner on Sunday, February 15.

The dinner was set at his home near Pleasant Grove. Everyone present enjoyed the occasion very much.

Instructions from National Headquarters were transmitted to the 133 Local Boards of Tennessee today by General T.A. Frazier, State Director, directing the boards to re-open and consider anew the classification of all registrants heretofore classified in Class 1-B or Class 1V-F by reasons of deficiencies in the teeth or eyesight.

The new ruling, therefore is expected to permit reclassification in Class 1-A, or available for full military service of many men now deferred as well as to permit induction of thousands of registrants who heretofore failed to qualify.

Chairman of the State Salvage Committee announced today the beginning of a state wide “Salvage For Victory” Program, an effort for industrial conservation designed to return to production centers materials vitally needed in the war effort such as scrap metals, rubber, rags and waste paper.

In a contest sponsored by raising funds for the Red Cross, the Celina Junior 4-H Club won first prize in a cookie sale and the solicitation of donations, according to an announcement by Miss Ruth Patton, home demonstration agent.

The Cumberland Mountains are not supplying their full share of the timber needs of the Nation in this time of extreme National Emergency because of the forest fires of the past. Those fires have resulted in millions of dollars of damage to the three million acres of timbered land that lay in the mountain section.
