In their final pair of games this regular season, the boys and girls CCHS basketball teams saw opposite results.

The Bulldogs knocked off two district foes and the Lady Dawgs took losses to the same teams.

Wins over Jackson County and Clarkrange vaulted the CCHS boys to the top with an undefeated District 7-A record of 8-0 and, on the other side of the coin, the Clay County girls fell to 4-4 in conference play with defeats to the same teams.

With the pair of wins, the Dawgs have secured an unblemished record in 2010 with over a dozen straight victories to reach the 20-win mark and to take the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament.

The girls finished with 19 wins and four of their five losses came against the first-seeded Lady Blue Devils and Clarkrange, the second seed in the tournament.

The Clay County High School boy’s basketball team notched a come-from-behind victory at Jackson County last week to wrap up the top seed in the upcoming District 7-A tournament.

The Bulldogs put up a staggering 28 fourth-quarter point total to put the game away and secure their number one position heading into the weekend.

Three CCHS players scored double digits, led by senior Shawn Garrett’s 22 point outing that offset Blue Devils’ big post player Mason Hensley’s 20-point tally.

Jackson County came out hot in front of their home crowd matching the Dawgs bucket for bucket in the first quarter.

CCHS fell behind at the half by a score of 30-27 after the Blue Devils outscored them 16-12 in second period, despite a pair of three-pointers dropped in by senior guard Joe Adams.

Jackson County could smell upset as they increased their lead by a score of 46-39 by the end of the third and they then stretched it to 10 before the Dawgs rallied with a scoring flurry of their own.

CCHS went on an 18-0 run to not only erase the Blue Devil deficit, but to go on to the six-point win behind their nearly 30-point outburst–which secured the coveted tournament top seed.

Garrett scored half of his point-total in the final stanza, including a rare basket from long-range and Trent Boles added nine of his 14 in the fourth quarter to push the Dawgs to victory.

Senior guard Brian Korth also had a big game scoring 11 points.

The CCHS Bulldogs doubled up visiting Clarkrange here in Celina last Thursday night behind Shawn Garrett’s 17 points paired with another 14 scored by recently named District 7-A player of the year Trent Boles.

The Dawgs were ahead by double digits at the half and they never looked back as they went on to the 55-24 victory.

The Clay County High School girls basketball team’s hopes of improving their District 7-A tournament seeding came to an end here in Gainesboro last week when the Lady Dawgs fell to the top-ranked Lady Blue Devils.

Senior Jackson County guard Laken Leonard scored 35 points to dash CCHS’ hopes, but the girls did put up a good fight early in the game.

The Lady Dawgs matched JCHS basket for basket in the first quarter and came out of the first period tied at 17 with the Lady Blue Devils.

In the second, Leonard showed why Middle Tennessee State signed her as she scored all but three of JCHS’ points heading into halftime, where her team lead by a score of 29-24.

Clay County’s Sydney Roach kept the Lady Dawgs in the game in the third when she poured in 11 of her 15 points to keep the score to a four-point margin in Jackson County’s favor heading into the final period.

After back-to-back baskets by CCHS’ Mackenzie Hamilton and Rachel Burnette tied the score at 45 with just over seven minutes to play, the Lady Blue Devils exploded with a 20-point run to finish off the Lady Dawgs by a score of 65-48.

Allie Brown joined Roach as CCHS’ only two double-digit scorers with 10 points and Rachel Burnette added 8 as the girls lost another conference game.

The Lady Dawgs had the lead at halftime at home against district foe Clarkrange last Thursday night, but they couldn’t hold off the visiting Lady Buffaloes as they went on to take the 11-point victory.

Senior guard Kayla Kimes lead CCHS with 13 points, but Clarkrange shut down leading scorers Sydney Roach, Sarah Ogletree, and Rachel Burnette to take the win.

The Lady Dawgs held on to a three point lead when they started the third quarter, but the Lady Buffaloes scored 18 points in the same period to take a four-point lead.

The outscoring continued for Clarkrange as they tallied 16 in the fourth compared to nine by CCHS and the Lady Dawgs fell 44-55.
