RED BOILING SPRINGS-The Clay County Lady Bulldog basketball team finished in fourth place in the District 7-A tournament after losing the consolation game to Pickett County last week, and their season ended here four nights later in the opening round of Region 4-A play, as they fell to host Red Boiling Springs 52-49.

With the conference tournament loss, the CCHS girls suffered their seventh defeat of the season, setting up a trip to play Red Boiling Springs here–whom they had defeated twice during the regular season.

The Lady Bulldogs ended the season with a 19-8 mark, finishing in third place in the district in the regular-season, fourth in the conference tournament, and returned to region play for the second time in four years. Friday night’s game was the last for seniors Sarah Ogletree, Courtney Key, and Kayla Kimes.

The CCHS Lady Dawgs faced Red Boiling Springs for the third time this season in their Region 4-A opener and Clay County had already beaten the host Lady Bulldogs twice this year, but the third time wasn’t a charm for the visiting team with the same mascot name.

Clay County’s Sarah Ogletree came out hot scoring 8 of her 11 in the first period, including a pair of three-point baskets, but RBS still led after one by a score of 15-12.

In the second quarter, leading scorer Rachel Burnette dropped in half of her 16-point tally and fellow Lady Bulldog Sydney Roach scored her initial basket to give CCHS their first lead in the contest.

Red Boiling took the reins back late in the same period, but Roach nailed one at the buzzer to give her team a two-point lead at the half by a score of 26-24.

After intermission, Clay County extended their lead by a point heading into the final stanza with the score at 40-37, thanks to a bucket by Casey Cooper and her control of the boards.

Ogletree’s final basket from long range pushed the visiting Lady Dawgs’ lead to its largest at eight–making the score 45-37, but RBS would eventually outscore Clay County 15-9 in the final period after they took the lead for good with just over a minute to play.

CCHS had a chance at the end after Red Boiling’s leading scorer Layce Colter (19) made the game’s final pair of points at the line with 26 seconds to play.

Coming out of a timeout, Burnette rubbed off a screen to the top of the key and fired the tying shot, but it rattled out.  Mackenzie Hamilton did pick up the rebound and got off another three-point try, but it was blocked by Colter to secure the three-point win for Red Boiling Springs at 52-49.

7-A CONSOLATION

LIVINGSTON-The Clay County girls basketball team fell here to Pickett County in the District 7-A tournament consolation game last Monday night, despite a 23-point outing by Lady Dawg Rachel Burnette.

CCHS led by three at the end of the first period, but headed into the half down by the same margin.  They knotted the game up heading into the final quarter, but the Lady Bobcats outscored the Lady Bulldogs by ten in the fourth to take the 66-56 win.

Pickett County’s Terrah Garner poured in 37 points to carry her team to the big victory over the higher-seeded Clay County squad.

The CCHS loss left them with a fourth-place finish in the conference tournament and Lady Dawgs Sarah Ogletree and Kayla Kimes were named to the all-tournament team (see related photo on page 8).
