CELINA-Ten new candidates have officially entered various races in the upcoming August 5 county general election and 10 others picked up qualifying papers, but have yet to return them–all since the HORIZON went to press a week ago Monday night.

Election administrator Wanda Daniels reported the addition of the new numbers to the already long list of election qualifiers and potential candidates this Monday afternoon (visit dalehollowhorizon.com for previously reported election news), and she said she expects this week to be a busy one with the deadline just a week away.

“The deadline is a week from Thursday (April 1),” Daniels said.  “The ballot will be set at 12 noon that day.

“I want all potential candidates to know their papers have to be filed before noon next Thursday, and not a minute after–12 p.m. is the deadline.”

The ten candidates who punched their tickets into the upcoming election by filing their qualifying papers last week did so for seven different available seats.

In the county-wide races, both incumbent road superintendent Ernest Garrison and his challenger Jason Browning qualified for the election, Tom Weir filed his papers for county mayor, and Sherry George joined the crowded race for county clerk.

Nathan Sherrell turned in his papers for the district five school board race, and five candidates qualified to run for the 10 available county commission seats.  They include Larry Roach in district one, Parrish Wright in district two, Anna Ruth Lock in district three, Al Shaver in district four, and Michelle “Mickie” Repecka in district five.

Two previously unopposed offices may see challengers, with a pair of potential candidates who have picked up papers for those seats heading the list of ten new people since last Monday who may enter the election.

Incumbent circuit court clerk Susan Birdwell, may be challenged by Monica Hayes if she files, and incumbent register of deeds Brenda Browning may see some competition from potential challenger Peggy Brown if she decides to return her papers.

James Reagan picked up papers for the district five constable seat; Christina Crawford and Robert Proffit did for school board in district two; and five potentials were on this week’s list to possibly run for commission seats:  Bryon Beck and Junior Strong in district one, John Davis in district two, and Champ Boles and Roxanna Groce in district five.
