BYRDSTOWN-The last ‘smallmouth-only’ night tournament held here at Star Point Resort this season will come in the form of the final ‘Major’ event this Saturday night, tournament director Randy Roysden said Monday.

“We are going to call it a year after Saturday night when we have the last big one,” he said.  “It’s been a good season and we hope to have a good crowd this weekend for the last one.”

The big tournaments are held three times a year during the season and feature a bigger pot and longer fishing hours.

The entry fee is $100 per boat and participants will fish from 7 p.m. until 3 a.m.

A pair of big ones

BYRDSTOWN-A pair of smallmouth over 21 inches long showed up at the scales here at Star Point Resort last Saturday night, but, unlike in weeks past, they were split between two teams.

Jamie and Jason Brown had the heaviest of the two weighing in at 4.67 pounds and they paired it with a small fish to total 6.33 pounds.

That weight was just barely enough to claim first place and $220, because they only won by seven one-hundredths of a pound.

Robert Reagan and Eddie Johnson’s 6.26-pound total fell just shy of the win.  They took the runner-up spot with a big fish weighing 4.17 pounds and another under the 16-inch mark to win $132.

The final paid position went to Mitch Robertson and Tim Reagan with two ‘unders’ weighing 3.87 pounds.  They pocketed $88.

CELINA-Danny Stone teamed up with Steven Arms Friday night, August 20 to win the final five-fish-limit event hosted by Friday night tournament director Luke Sherrell, which ended up being the final event of the season for the series (see related story).

The victory came one night after Stone’s win in the Thursday-nighter the same week (as reported last week), and it was the second of four consecutive victories for him.

He and Arms used over 10 pounds to win, while Shawn and John Kendall took the runner-up spot just behind them.  Brent McCloud rounded out the list of money-winners that night taking the big fish award with a four-pound largemouth.

A day shy of a week later the veteran angler claimed victory in last week’s Thursday night tournament.

Stone carried his regular Thursday night partner Jay Halfacre to victory again as the duo produced a 4.67-pound big fish and another small fish to go with it.  Their total of 6.25 pounds was enough to hand them the win and $132.

Second place and $88 went to Brian Dickerson and Brad “Goggle-eye” Cross with a pair weighing 2.87 pounds.

Getting back in the boat with Arms on Saturday night, Stone went on to win a three-fish event held up the lake at Wisdom Dock with another 10-plus-pound catch, completing his four-tournament run.

Friday night events

are over for the year

CELINA-The Friday night ‘any species’ events came to an end here two weeks ago, with no tournament being held last week.

Ernest Garrison and Jerry Scott, and Shawn and John Kendall took the final two regular season events.

Garrision and Scott used over eight pounds a few weeks back to claim victory, while the Kendalls almost matched that with around seven and a half pounds the following week.

Tournament director Luke Sherrell thanked all who participated this year for fishing and said he was already looking forward to next year.

Thursday-nighters

to end on Sept. 16

CELINA-The Thursday night ‘smallmouth-only’ tournament series will hold their final event of the year on September 16, leaving this week’s competition and two more as the last chance for anglers to compete at night this summer here at Dale Hollow Marina.

The big fish of the year pot is still up for grabs and will be through the last event.  Those invested in the additional competition have three more shots at the prize.

The tournaments start at 7 p.m. and participants return to a 11 p.m. weigh-in.  The entry fee is $20 per boat.  For more information about the competitions, call Steve at 823-5746 or Jeff at 823-4233.
