RED BOILING SPRINGS – Funeral Services for Gladys Brandon Biles, age 92, of Red Boiling Springs, TN were conducted Sunday afternoon, August 29, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. from the Anderson & Son Funeral Home Chapel in Red Boiling Springs, TN with Jimmy Cook officiating. Interment followed in the Gamaliel Cemetery. Honorary Pallbearers were Brenda Hudson, Hilda Dycus, Kathy Jordan, Pat Asberry, Inez Etheridge, Geneva M. Ferguson, Donna Buntin, Shirley Austin, Jennie White, Terilyn Jenkins, and Alene McGuire. Active Pallbearers were Greg Biles, Chad Guffey, John Zalewski, Jacob Zalewski, Nick Zalewski, Ben Zalewski, and Kenny Ferguson.
Gladys Brandon Biles passed away Friday morning, August 27, 2010 at her residence.
She was the wife of the Honorable William Poe Biles. She was the daughter of the late Bransford and Alice Hale Brandon of Gamaliel, KY. Gladys was born on July 3, 1918 in Gamaliel, KY. She and her husband, Poe Biles, were married in 1938 until his death on March 17, 2000.
Gladys received her Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education from Tennessee Technological University and taught with her husband for several years in Clay County before moving to the Willette community in Macon County. Poe became the Principal at Willette School and Gladys was a cook at his school. They moved to Red Boiling Springs in 1950. Gladys was the City Clerk in Red Boiling Springs for seventeen years and was instrumental in the developmental in the development of the Cordell Hull Watershed Program after the flood of 1969. After retiring from her position as City Clerk, Gladys was a permanent fixture at every election for eighteen years as the voter registrar. She was a member of the Gamaliel Baptist Church, the Macon county Home Demonstration Club, and many Parent Teacher Organizations. She was an avid sports fan. She sat in the stands through the years watching her three children and grandson play basketball, her husband coach at RBS, Willette, and Enon, and her son coach her youngest daughter at RBS. She cheered for both teams when her husband coached Willette and her son coached and daughter played at RBS against each other. Gladys loved University of Kentucky basketball and Braves baseball.
Preceded in death by her husband, William Poe Biles, Gladys is survived by her children: Mary Alice (Buddy) Morgan, Charles William Biles (Patricia Ferguson) and Jane Ellen Biles (Curtis Reed); four grandchildren: Charla Beth Biles (John) Zalewski, Gregory Halsell Biles, Leslie Rae Biles Palk, and Chad William (Kandra) Guffey; five great-grandchildren: Jacob Ty, Nick Vincent, and Ben William Zalewski, Holly Beth Palk, and Morgan Grace Guffey; two sisters-in-law: Dimple Brandon, Gamaliel, KY and Elise Biles Prince, Winchester, TN; a host of nieces and nephews and their descendants; beloved friends: Joe Smet, Lowell Smith, and Billy Joe Carver, RBS; and her two devoted caregivers, Ann Jones and Missy Allen, RBS. She was preceded in death by her older brother and sister-in-law, Earl Clay (Ruby) Brandon, Moroa, IL and her younger brother, Clifton (Pete) Brandon, Gamaliel, KY.
