CELINA-The Clay County High Lady Bulldog basketball team picked up a win over visiting Macon County here Friday night, the final of three wins for the team last week, including a district road win.

The Lady Dawgs took a four-game winning streak into last night’s game against Pickett County, and had also won eight of their past 10 games.  The CCHS girls carried an impressive 17-6 overall record into the week. 

In other action last week, the CCHS girls beat 7-A foe Monterey and also topped Van Buren County.  They will face the powerful Upperman Lady Bees, ranked second in the state in Class AA, on Friday night.

Clay County hit Monterey with an almost-knockout punch in the first quarter, taking a commanding 16-2 lead into the second quarter, and the Lady Bulldogs were in control the rest of the game. 

Monterey chipped away at the lead in the second quarter, and pulled to within 11 (27-16) at intermission, but Clay County answered in the opening minutes of the third quarter. 

CCHS scored the first eight-points of that quarter, with Tristan Watson connecting on a pair of foul shots and Kayla Kimes connecting twice from the field. That pushed the led out to 19 points and pretty much put the game out of reach.  The teams combined for only 11 points in the final eight minutes. 

Amelia Kirk led the team with 10 points in a balanced effort, and according to unofficial statistics, matched the  Monterey team total in rebounds by herself. She hauled down 11 rebounds, as did Monterey, according to the Herald-Citizen. Sydney Roach added eight points for CCHS.

The Lady Bulldogs used a big scoring margin in the third quarter to rack up another non-district win with another balanced scoring effort. 

Van Buren County led 11-10 after one, but the Lady Bulldogs battled back to take a 20-18 led at the half. 

Clay County took control of the game with a 19-3 scoring bulge in the third quarter, and easily took the win from that point, coasting to the 20-point victory. 

Sarah Ogletree led the way with 14 points, and was joined in double figures by Kirk (13) and Sydney Roach (11).

CCHS led all the way in this game, riding the scoring of Watson in the first half and Kirk in the second half to win their fourth in a row. 

Watson scored all her 16 points in the first half, when the Lady Dawgs built a 28-19 lead. Kirk scored all 15 of her points after intermission, as Clay County fought off a Macon County run over a five to six-minute span in the late third quarter and early fourth quarter. 

The Lady Bulldogs led 15-7 after one quarter, as Watson scored 10 points. Emma and Sarah Ogletree scored buckets in the quarter and Kimes added a free throw. 

Watson kept the hot hand in the early going of the second quarter. Her 16th and final points of the game made it 24-9. At that point, six of Macon County’s nine points had come from the free throw line. The Tigerettes finally warmed up from the field, though and cut the lead down to nine points at intermission. Megan Moore chipped in with three points for CCHS in the second quarter. 

Kirk picked up the scoring burden in the third quarter, scoring nine of Clay’s 12 points. The lead was as much as 13 in the quarter for the Lady Dawgs, but a late three-pointer by Macon County cut the lead to 40-35 heading into the final eight minutes. 

Kirk scored the first four points in the fourth quarter for Clay to make it 44-37, but the Tigerettes trimmed that lead to four. That was as close as it would get. A pair of free throws by Kimes at the 3:32 mark pushed the lead back to six, and baskets by Sarah Ogletree and Kirk (her 15th point of the second half) made it 50-40.

Emma Ogletree kept the lead at 10 with a basket at the 1:42 mark, and the Lady Dawgs held on for the win.
