Basketball teams were looking for first wins at Macon County Tuesday
Nate Adams drops 33 points in debut on the hardwood
LAFAYETTE-Both Clay County High School basketball teams were still looking for their first wins of the season as they traveled here to face Macon County Tuesday night.
The Lady Bulldogs fell to 0-3 and the Bulldogs began their season with an 0-1 record when both squads lost at Jackson County last Friday night.
The Dawgs did get in the win column by defeating the Tigers to begin this week’s action, but the Clay County girls remained winless despite a good effort here on the road (see details in next week’s HORIZON).
Last week, the Lady Blue Devils also topped the Lady Dawgs 57-30, and they gained control with a second-quarter where they outscored Clay County 14-4.
The home team led 28-15 at the break, and the Lady Dawgs never recovered, as junior Ella Eads finished as the only Clay County player in double figures with 13 points on the night.
Senior Laci Wix did add four points, while sophomores Haylen Garrison and Natalie Smith and freshman Lila Birdwell scored three each. Juniors Baylor Walden and Claire Kendall also added two points apiece in the loss.
The Bulldogs suffered the same fate as their female counterparts, as they fell behind early and lost to the Blue Devils 74-61.
Jackson County scored the first seven points of the ballgame and then opened the second quarter on a 10-0 run to surge ahead 30-11.
The Dawgs did wake up the rest of the way behind an impressive 33-point season debut from senior Nate Adams, but the damage was done in the first half.
Clay County outscored the Blue Devils 37-36 in the final two quarters to no avail, as Jackson County’s early margin held up for the 13-point victory.
The balance of the Bulldog scoring was produced by junior Cole Eads (7), senior Lance Burchett (6), senior Hayden Adams (4), junior Warner Melton (4), junior Nolan Adams (3), junior Reece Adams (2), and sophomore Jake Copeland (2).
Besides their trip to Macon County, the Clay County teams will host East Robertson for their home opener Friday night in Celina, before traveling to Livingston next Tuesday for more non-conference action.
