City adding extra police for Halloween patrol
CELINA-The City of Celina voted to approve a police budget amendment at their October meeting for the purpose of adding extra law enforcement coverage next week for Halloween.
The move comes in response to egging getting out of hand last year, city officials said.
Officials have also advertised those caught throwing eggs will be arrested and charged with vandalism.
“With egging getting out of control in the past, City of Celina officials are taking a no tolerance approach this year and will arrest offenders,” the ad circulated in print and on social media this month said.
It also reminds there is an 11 p.m. curfew for juveniles, which will be enforced.
In addition, fines exceeding $100 will be levied for egg throwing.
The advertisement, which appears on page 6 of this week’s HORIZON, also said all guidelines will be enforced with “no excuses” and “no exceptions.”
At the November 2023 city meeting, local residents and business owners addressed the board of mayor and alderman about the egging problem.
Police chief Terry Scott told the board “the only thing that will stop it is enforcement,” and alderman Justin Rich said “there has to be dire consequences of being caught,” as reported in the November 22, 2023 edition of the HORIZON.
It was also reported many of the people causing issues last year were from other areas and traveled to Celina specifically to throw eggs on Halloween.
At the time, city officials were considering requesting help from surrounding counties and possibly the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
Though no details on the specifics of the additional law enforcement were announced, funding was approved earlier this month and residents can expect to see additional officers on patrol for Halloween next week.
