Clay native, WW II veteran Brown honored in Putnam County by Cookeville Herald-Citizen
FORMER CLAY COUNTIAN HONORED-Clay County native Clyde Regnal Brown was recently honored as the Cookeville Herald-Citizen’s Veteran of the Week. Brown, raised in the Butler’s Landing community of Clay County and the son of the late Frank and Hester Brown, now resides in Cookeville. He was a Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class in World War II, being inducted into the U.S. Navy on July 7, 1942, and discharged Nov. 22, 1945. He served aboard the U.S.S. Nicholas DD/449 in the South Pacific, participating in the battle of Kula Gulf, and later assisting in the rescue of U.S.S. Helena survivors. For this action against the enemy, the ship was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation. He is joined here with his daughter, Bobbi Showalter. (Photo courtesy Herald-Citizen)
