Jr. High holds homecoming, golf sets a program record
WEEKLY SPORTS REVIEW:
CLAY COUNTY-The Celina Jr. Dawgs holding their homecoming and the Clay County High School boys golf team setting a program record highlighted the week here in local sports.
The CCHS volleyball team also got back to their winning ways, while the Jr. Lady Dawgs were idle to take time to participate in homecoming week with the football players.
Youth league football is also in full swing and the Bulldog cross country team will continue their season this week.
Jr. Dawgs
Prior to homecoming queen Darci Smith and football queen Haylen Garrison being crowned, the Jr. Dawgs battled with Monterey in a tight contest throughout the majority of the first half.
The game was knotted up at six late in the second quarter, before the Wildcats broke a long touchdown run, a Celina interception turned into a Monterey scoop and score, and a pick six put the visitors up 30-6 at the break.
The Jr. Dawgs did score on their opening possession of the second half, but the touchdown served as the only one the remainder of the game.
Celina fell to 1-4 on the season with the 30-14 loss and the Jr. Dawgs were set to travel to Westmoreland Tuesday for their next contest.
Golf
The CCHS golf team had a good outing last week at Southern Hills, as senior Lady Dawg Lexi Head shot a season-best 51 and the boys team set a program record with a five-player combined score of 158.
Aden Smith (37), Aiden Keen (35), Caleb McLerran (40), Lance Burchett (48), and Jacob Coffelt (46), along with alternate Colton Smith (43), all played well to defeat the defending district-champion Upperman Bees (169).
The golfers were set to enjoy their final tuneup for the district tournament in Tompkinsville, KY Tuesday, before beginning the postseason in Crossville at Bear Trace Monday, September 19.
Lady Dawgs
The CCHS volleyball team improved to 3-5 on the season with a win over Westmoreland last Friday in five sets and they were set to host Red Boiling Springs Tuesday at 1 p.m., before traveling to Jackson County Thursday for a match to begin at 4 p.m.
The Lady Dawgs are being led by returning starting seniors Briley Burchett, Isabella Hale, Abby Head, and Baileigh Watson, along with junior Emma Walker. They are also relying on a couple of freshman—Reagan Cherry and Baylor Walden—to fill major roles.
Youth League
Like the Jr. Dawgs, the youth league football teams also held their homecoming last week, prior to taking on Gordonsville.
Though all three teams were defeated and are now 0-2 on the season, all of the squads improved this week.
The flag team only trailed 0-6 at halftime, before losing 22-6, while the juniors (40-6) and seniors (42-6) both moved the ball and got in the end zone in their losses.
Jr. Lady Dawgs
The Jr. Lady Dawg volleyball team did not play last week.
They were 5-3 on the season heading into action Monday against Red Boiling Springs. Celina will also travel to Jackson County for a match on Thursday and will play at Upperman Middle School on Monday, September 19.
Cross country
Coming off several good showings recently, the CCHS cross country team was set to compete in the Coffee County Invitational in Manchester Tuesday.
The cross country roster is made up of lone senior Jed McLerran; juniors Noah Groce, Callie Devanna, and Brayden Allred; sophomores Mia Ledbetter, Alyssa Strong, and Ethan Barnes; and freshman Brayden Smith.
