Golf in the regionals, home finales highlight the week in local sports
CLAY COUNTY-The Clay County High School golf team playing in the regionals and other teams hosting home finales highlight this week in local sports.
Bulldog golfers were set to begin the region tournament at Southern Hills in Cookeville Monday after HORIZON press time, while the Lady Dawg volleyball team will hold Senior Night and the Jr. Dawg football team will have 8th Grade Night on Thursday.
Youth League football and CCHS Cross Country also continue their seasons this week, while the Jr. Lady Dawg volleyball team wraps up their 2022 campaign over the same stretch.
Golf
The CCHS boys golf team advanced to regional play this week with a runner-up finish in the district tournament held last week at Bear Trace in Crossville.
Senior Caleb McLerran paced the Dawgs in the postseason match and also finished as the top individual in the tournament by shooting a solid 76 on the narrow course.
Sophomore Lance Burchett also advanced to region play individually with a fifth-place finish.
The golf team is made up of seniors Lexi Head, Aden Smith, Colton Smith, Jacob Coffelt, Caleb McLerran, and Gaven Beasley; sophomores Erin Meadows and Lance Burchett; and freshmen Maryna Sherrell, Nolan Adams, Brady Dailey, Aiden Keen, Cordell McLerran, and Levi Ogletree. The team is coached by Josh Jenkins and assistant Andrew Meadows.
Lady Dawgs
The CCHS volleyball team notched a win over Smith County last week and they were set to travel to Watertown Tuesday, before hosting Trousdale County for a Senior Night contest at Joe Sims Gym here tonight in their regular-season finale.
Seniors Briley Burchett, Isabella Hale, Abby Head, Baileigh Watson, Katie Burnette, and Kalista Meadows will be honored prior to the game beginning at 5 p.m.
The Lady Dawgs are being led by returning starting seniors Burchett, Hale, Head, and Watson, along with junior Emma Walker. They have also relied on a trio of freshman throughout the season—Reagan Cherry, Baylor Walden, and Ella Eads.
Postseason action begins this Monday, with opening rounds of the district tournament hosted by higher seeds. The semifinals and finals will then be held at Red Boiling Springs High School on Tuesday.
Jr. Dawgs
The Celina Jr. Dawgs will wrap up their season this week by hosting Jackson County for 8th Grade Night at John Teeples Field tonight.
Those to be honored include Jake Pennington, Julian Villa, Sam Brown, Waylon Hayes, Thomas Ashley, Jimmy Villa, Thomas Myrick, Jake Copeland, Oliver Boles, Javin Crawford, Andrew Hale, Rolan Holaway, and Cage Ashley.
The team is 1-6 on the season and is looking for a good finish.
They lost a tough one to the Jr. Blue Devils earlier this year by a score of 6-14 and are looking for redemption in their final contest.
Kick off is set for 6:30 p.m.
Cross country
Coming off a good showings at the Speedway Shootout held at the Nashville Super Speedway in Lebanon last weekend, the CCHS cross country team was set to compete in a meet at Sequatchie County Tuesday.
The were also scheduled to run at Macon County next Thursday, October 6.
The cross country team is made up of lone senior Jed McLerran; juniors Noah Groce, Callie Devanna, and Brayden Allred; sophomores Mia Ledbetter, Alyssa Strong, and Ethan Barnes; and freshman Brayden Smith.
Jr. Lady Dawgs
The Jr. Lady Dawg volleyball team will finish out their season this week.
They headed into a match with Dodson’s Branch Monday with a 7-5 record, after going 2-2 in their last four games.
The Jr. Lady Dawgs notched wins over Red Boiling Springs and Monterey and had losses to both Jackson County and Upperman.
Their final game will come on the road at Jim B. Satterfield in Hartsville on Thursday at 5 p.m.
The team is being led by 8th-graders Haylen Garrison, Jenna Thompson, Emma Wix, Avrie Davis, Darci Smith, Natalie Smith, Abigail Shaull, and Lily Pigg—who were all honored last week on 8th Grade Night when they beat Monterey.
Youth League
The Clay County Youth League football teams will all be looking for their first wins when they travel to Cannon County Saturday, after they fell to Smith County at home last weekend and Watertown the week prior.
Against the Purple Tigers, the Flag team lost 12-21 in a competitive game, where both scores came from Zaxton Owens, and the Junior squad fell in a heartbreaker by a score of 6-7, where Tucker Donaldson broke free for the black and gold’s only touchdown.
The Senior team’s final deficit was larger, as they defeated by Watertown 6-44, in a game where Landon Sather found the end zone for Clay County.
In the losses to Smith County, the Flag team lost 0-13, the juniors were shutout 0-22, and the seniors fell 6-41.
The only Bulldog touchdown scored last weekend came in the form of a 60-yard pass from quarterback Brentley Long to wideout Carter Colson.
