versus McKenzie
CELINA-Not only have senior Bulldogs Joseph Marcom and Alec Kerr been a big reason why Clay County will play for a BlueCross Bowl Class A State Championship Friday at 2 p.m. CST versus McKenzie, they have also broken program records during the historic postseason run.
Most recently, Marcom set a new single-season rushing-yardage and rushing-touchdown mark in the Dawgs’ win over Coalfield here last Friday night, while Kerr became the leader in career and single-season receiving touchdowns, and also moved into second all-time in receiving yardage, during Clay County’s playoff push.
Marcom surpassed Gary Davis’ 1,644 yards from 1993 and currently has a total of 1,662 yards rushing this season, while he also topped Jimmy “Crank” Hull (1985: 28 TDs) in the season-scoring category for a running back, by rushing for his 29th touchdown in the semifinal win.
Kerr notched his milestone achievements in Clay County’s quarterfinal victory over Whitwell, when he caught his 11th touchdown of the season to break Greg Craig’s longstanding record (10 TDs) from 1974 and surpass Wyatt Mabry (2012-15) in all-time career receiving touchdowns with 24.
Marcom and Kerr also moved up other respective career lists in their final campaigns as Bulldogs.
Marcom’s current total of 2,831 career yards ranks third all-time, behind Davis’ 4,274 yards (1991-94) and Hull’s 3,677 yards (1982-85). He also trails both Hull (54 TDs) and Davis (50 TDs) in career rushing touchdowns with 49.
Kerr currently has 1,912 receiving yards, ranking him second all-time behind Mabry (2,500), while his classmate Jimmy Burchett (1,280) moved into third place, after passing up his uncle Brian Burchett’s 1,232 amassed from 1987 to 1990.
Jimmy (14) trails Brian (17), Mabry (22), and Kerr in all-time career receiving touchdowns, and he ranks tied for fourth with B.J. Emberton (2015-18).
Marcom, Kerr, and Burchett have a chance to improve on their already historic numbers Friday in Chattanooga, when Clay County (13-1) takes on McKenzie (14-0) in the state title game at 2 p.m. CST.
