Region 4 football teams off to a good overall start
From Staff Reports
Region 4-A football teams have fared pretty well in the first two weeks of play, all outside the conference, and five of the region’s nine teams have still not recorded a loss.
The four 2-A playoff teams have a collective 6-2 record heading into the third week of play, while the five 1-A playoff teams, which include Clay County, are 5-2. All four of the 2-A teams have a pair of games under their belt, while three of the five 1-A teams have played only one game.
Monterey, the Bulldogs’ next foe, is off to a 2-0 start, having rambled easily past in-county rival Upperman last Friday night.
Here’s a team-by-team look at the results of the Region 4 teams for the first two weeks of the season by playoff classification:
1-A classification
1. Monterey (2-0): In addition to their big rivalry win over the Bees (29-15), the Wildcats also defeated Wartburg 20-12 in Week Zero. The Bulldogs must travel to Monterey on Friday night in an important region matchup. See a preview story on that game on the HORIZON website on Thursday.
2. Gordonsville (0-1): The Tigers lost to in-county rival Smith County 20-12 in their only action of the year Friday night. The Tigers led that contest 12-7 heading into the final quarter before the Owls mounted their comeback.
3. Clay County (1-0): The Bulldogs beat Taft Youth Center 26-16 in Week Zero with an impressive defensive performance.
4. Red Boiling Springs (1-0): RBS broke their 60-plus game losing streak with a 28-12 win over Oakdale in Week Zero, attracting media attention from across the state.
5. Pickett County (1-1): The Bobcats made it 2-0 for Region 4 against Oakdale last Friday night with a 15-6 win. They had lost to Upperman 53-12 in their first game, but did score the first 12 points of the contest. Bobcat quarterback Nick Cross was a one-man wrecking crew against Oakdale, passing for 180 yards on 13 completions in 21 attempts, and rushing for 96 yards on 21 carries.
