Volunteers needed for Clay Sesquicentennial
Kickoff event
set June 23
CELINA-The Clay County Historic Preservation Committee (HPC) is looking for volunteers to help make the county sesquicentennial that will take place in 2020 a success, and they have scheduled a kickoff event here next weekend.
Working with the Clay County Courthouse Committee and the Clay County Museum of History, the HPC will host a 150th anniversary kickoff event Saturday, June 23 at the courthouse. Several events, including photo and oral history collection and volunteer recruitment, will be a part of the day’s activities.
Photo scanners and recording devices will be set up to begin collecting more of the county’s history, and more displays and events are planned. Dozens of volunteers will also be needed for the 2020 event, and can sign up on June 23 or later.
There will also be food, live music and other activities that day.
“We need everyone from every community to be involved in saving our heritage,” ThreeStar committee chairperson Melissa White said. “Every family, community, church, and organization in the county has at least one historian who has likely already collected many of the items that all of our citizens need to experience.
“We have a number of initiatives we’re already working on and we invite interested citizens to be a part of these. A great deal of historic preservation has been done in Clay County in the past, but there’s a lot more work that needs to be done. Saving and preserving our historic places, photos, videos, documents, letters, artifacts, and oral history is a never-ending process.”
If you would like to volunteer to help with committee projects or if you have information or items to share, e-mail the committee at [email protected]. The HPC has been approved by the county commission as the official sesquicentennial organizing group.
